Pallikarnai sewage pumping station to get new lease of life

The project to provide underground sewerage network in Pallikaranai is expected to be completed on schedule with the Chennai Corporation allotting alternative space for a sewage pumping station.

The council that met on Wednesday approved a resolution to allot a portion of land in the solid waste disposal site, measuring about 1,000 sq.m., at Pallikaranai. This alternative site was earmarked for constructing the sewage pumping station instead of the one near Veerathamman temple tank, Pallikaranai.

Officials of the Chennai Metrowater said that following residents’ protests in the neighbouring localities and technical hitches in building the pumping station at the spot, the water agency sought an alternative site.

The sewage pumping station in Pallikaranai would come up as part of the comprehensive drainage network taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. While work is in progress to construct three sewage pumping stations in Balaji Nagar, Vivekananda Nagar and Kamakoti Nagar, the fourth one was awaiting the allocation of space.

Of the 20,000 house service connections planned, about 6,400 connections have been provided so far. Sewer pipelines would be laid for a distance of 86 km covering 681 streets under the Rs.52.53 crore project.“We have completed the laying of pipeline in 120 streets and handed them over to the Corporation for re-laying of roads. We will be able to complete the project by February next year,” said an official.

Mayor says no cholera deaths in city this year

 Staff Reporter

Responding to media reports on Wednesday on the number of cholera deaths in Chennai, Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy clarified that the data available with the civic body was wrong. “We checked with the birth and death registry and found that the data entry operators had made typographical error. Cardiac arrest was misspelt as Cholera by the data entry operators,” said Mr. Duraisamy.“There have been no deaths due to Cholera in Chennai in 2012,” he added.

On Saturday morning, Pullammal, a 60-year-old woman resident of Ossankulam in Chetpet, who had been admitted three days ago for treatment of diarrhoea, died following renal complications.

Meanwhile, as many as 21 new cases of diarrhoea were reported in the city on Wednesday. According to Chennai Corporation officials, no cases of cholera were among those admitted to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) and the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet on Wednesday. While 20 persons were admitted to the CDH, one was admitted to KMCH. The patients hailed from localities including Perambur and Kodungaiyur.

69 undergo treatment

A total of 69 persons are undergoing treatment. As many as 21 patients were discharged on Wednesday.Mr. Duraisamy termed false the allegation of former Mayor M. Subramanian that the work on new Communicable Diseases Hospital was being delayed because of the existing local government “We will take action against the contractors who have colluded with the previous regime and wilfully delayed the project,” said Mr.Duraisamy.
