Dump yard or Pallavaram lake?

Jan. 20: Despite the state government’s drive to remove encroachments on lakes in the city and its suburban areas, the Pallavaram municipality has been dumping garbage on Royapettah lake, also known as Pallavaram Periya eri, and destroying its water resources. The 216-acre lake has already been reduced to less than 100 acres by continued encroachment and garbage dumping by the municipality.

In a day, around 85 to 100 tonnes of garbage generated in the 42 wards of the municipality are dumped in the lake which attracts a large variety of migratory birds.

A resident said the lake was once the main source of water for irrigating agricultural land in and around Pallavaram. The residents said many encroachments had come up on the lake after the laying of the Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam radial road, which bisects the lake into two water bodies.

A councillor, on condition of anonymity, said the municipality has been dumping garbage in spite of a Madras high court order restraining it from doing so. The court also directed the civic body to remove all encroachments on the lake and put up a fence on the bank.

The councillor said the court order was not implemented by the municipality even though it amounts to contempt of court. He also said if the dumping of waste in the lakebed was not stopped immediately, the water body would disappear in a couple of years.

However, a municipality official said the government has come up with a comprehensive solid waste management plan for Pallavaram, Alandur and Tambaram municipalities.

Corporation seals three hotels

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Tuesday sealed three hotels on Poonamallee High Road for not having diaphragm chambers and letting unfiltered sewage into the main lines.

Based on complaints, Mayor M. Subramanian, who inspected the area, directed that if the hotels did not have such chambers, action would be initiated against them.

The diaphragm chambers help in filtering the solid waste and in their absence the sewer lines get blocked. It also often resulted in sewage overflow on the road.

Mr.Subramanian said that such a situation posed health hazards to both the public and those staying at the hotels.

100 tonnes of garbage cleared from Chennai beaches

CHENNAI: People who visited the beaches of Chennai on Saturday to celebrate ‘Kaanum Pongal’ left more than 100 tonnes of garbage on the sands.

Conservancy workers found it tough to cope with the piling up of garbage and keep the beach clean on Saturday as visitors kept littering the area.

More than 125 conservancy workers of the Chennai Corporation and Neel Metal Fanalca worked the whole night to clean the beaches, including Marina and Elliots, as the number of visitors increased considerably, according to officials.

P. Jyothi Raj, one of the workers said, “Even as we were removing garbage people were continuing to litter the beach. We had to work from the evening of ‘Kaanum Pongal’ till 4 a.m. on Sunday to clean the area under the guidance of officials.”

People continued their celebrations till midnight and continued to throw plastic bottles, spoons and polythene bags, he said.

Cleaning of the beach would have been easier if more people had used the waste bins, said Mr. Raj.

Around 15 compactor bins and 25 collection bins were used to collect waste but people were reluctant to use the bins for disposal of waste, said an official.

Most people seemed to have forgotten the ban on plastics on the Marina and more than three tonnes of plastic waste was collected on Saturday, he added.
