Tirupur: Civic bodies in Tirupur have envisaged some plans to improve roads in the district. The project is estimated to cost about Rs. 50 crore.

Official sources told The Hindu that as part of the package, two earthen road stretches in Tirupur block, measuring 5.48 km, would shortly be converted into black top surfaces at Rs. 92 lakh.

The sources said the segments selected by the Tirupur Panchayat Union administration were located in Muthanampalayam and Mudalipalayam villages. The project cost would be met by the pooled assigned revenue.

Another major project was the improvement of roads in Tirupur city at Rs 31.22 crore. Under the scheme, cement concrete roads and black top surfaces would be laid in as many as 112 sectors based on requirements. The battered sections in the city would be given a facelift, the sources said.

Of the Rs. 31.22 crore, a major chunk would be spent in Marudhachalapuram, Velan Nagar, Gayathri Nagar, Ayyan Nagar, Mullai Nagar, Kuzhathaiappa Nagar, Kannagi Nagar and Kurinji Nagar, among others. The poor road conditions in the city had come under severe criticism during many council meetings.

In Kangayam town panchayat two black top roads and a cement concrete road would be laid before the end of the current financial year. Funds for this would be drawn from a corpus created under the All Town Panchayat Anna Renaissance Scheme.

In Vellokoil third grade municipality 16 black topping works on a stretch of about 40 km will be taken up during 2010-11.The estimated outlay for this project is Rs 4.1 crore. If all these projects materialise one can witness a smooth traffic on roads in Tirupur district.
