Scheme benefits roads in municipality

Special Correspondent

JAYAMKONDAM: Roads which remained neglected for the past seven years to one decade in Jayamkondam municipality, will be relaid under the ‘special road scheme' for which the State government had sanctioned about Rs.Two crore.

Works under the scheme, to be taken up in course of time, are bound to benefit a majority of residents who have been crying for the road facility for the past several years.

Jayamkondam remained a town panchayat and paucity of funds for the local body hindered the provision of road facility to the town. It was upgraded into the status of third grade municipality, making it eligible for several civic facility-oriented developmental schemes.

Being a developing town, several new residential colonies have come in the town, resulting in the need for provision of civic needs, particularly road facility, say the local residents.

“The Manakarai Orappar street, for instance, was laid several years ago. Road facility in residential colonies such as Srinivasa Nagar and Dr. Ambedkar Nagar has been the felt need of the residents, The operation of buses would ease, once the road is laid up to Periya Valayam,” says Latha Ganesan, municipal chairperson.

Talking on the sidelines of the municipal council meeting held here on Tuesday, she said that the works had been sanctioned in two packages to a cumulative length of 4.736 km.

The meeting adopted a resolution that the municipality would desist from manual scavenging and ensure safety measures while handling sewerage lines, in accordance with the directive issued by the Directorate of Municipal Administration.
