Interior roads to be repaired

The Chennai Corporation will commence re-laying work on 204 km of interior roads on September 1. Re-laying of over 450 damaged roads will be completed before the onset of the northeast monsoon.

Tenders for 40 of the 44 packages of the Rs.108-crore work have been finalised.Over 959 roads have been covered under these packages worth Rs.95.28 crore. The re-tender for the remaining four packages in areas such as Tiruvottiyur will be done shortly.

Re-laying of interior roads in all zones except Anna Nagar will be taken up under the project.Anna Nagar will have more cement concrete roads under another initiative of the civic body. Zones such as Manali, Madhavaram, Perungudi, Alandur and Adyar will be the key beneficiaries of the bitumen road work.

The development of grid system of roads under the mega city development mission is in full swing.Development of 196 roads is under way as part of the Rs. 333-crore work with funding from the State government.

The grid system of roads will have an integrated development of stormwater drains, footpaths, streetlights, duct for cables and street furniture.

The newly added zones will get a better network of roads under the project.A chunk of the work is expected to be completed before the monsoon.
