Widen Tiruchi Road: committee

Special Correspondent

The Sulur division Tiruchi Road Widening Committee, formed recently by the road users, plans to hold a protest at Karur on April 2 to demand immediate steps to widen 7.5 km of road from Kangeyampalayam to Nilambur-Madukkarai bypass here.

Kannampalayam Town Panchayat president Thalapathi Murugesan told The Hindu on Monday that an all-party meeting was held in at Sulur recently. The NH-67 that passes through the district was widened up to Sulur town. Since the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed a bypass road from Kangeyampalayam to Mettupalayam, the 7.5 km stretch from Kangeyampalayam to the bypass (which passes through the main Sulur area) was not widened. “There is an accident every day on this road,” he said.

Even if the bypass will be developed, it will not ease the traffic on the main Tiruchi Road.

There are thousands of vehicles, including buses and trucks, from other districts and cities that use this road to reach Coimbatore.
