Chennai’s main roads will soon give commuters a hassle-free road experience as the Chennai Corporation has decided to give 30 arterial roads in the city a facelift, bringing them up to international standards.

Main bus routes in Chennai like RK Salai, LB Road, Nelson Manickam Road, Dr Ambedkar Road etc will see dedicated footpaths, benches and cycling lanes among other additions.

Four roads so far have been identified by a private consultant appointed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) for which a detailed report has been submitted to the Corporation for consideration.

Dr Ambedkar Road and first, fourth and 11th avenues of Ashok Nagar have been identified, for which Corporation officials and Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraiswamy made site visits.

Key departments connected to roadways like the Storm Water Drain Department, Slum Clearance Board, Electricity Board and the Revenue Department had a meeting to discuss the work that needs to be undertaken from their sides, said a communication from the Corporation.

In addition, telephone companies like BSNL, Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone, etc who have their cables under the roads also met the Corporation.Officials from the Corporation said that an estimate for the construction work to be undertaken will be submitted in a week’s time.

“We will float the tender immediately and if the first tenders are taken up, work can start in as soon as two months,” they said. The Corporation has also directed the consultant to submit a report in two days detailing the problems and disturbances that might crop up during road work.

RAAC demands more link roads in city

Staff Reporter

Suggests development of roads to decongest areas that see frequent traffic snarls

Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) has urged the Corporation to take up more link roads. The Association said that the city was badly in need of roads to reduce congestion and aid the city’s growth.

RAAC’s honorary secretary R. Raveendran said that the Association first took up the issue with the Corporation asking it to develop 12 roads, that were crucial to decongest areas that saw frequent traffic jam. This was in 2007.

After sustained pressure and frequent interaction with the Corporation, the civic body prior to the conduct of the World Classical Tamil Conference took up five roads for development.

Those included Rangavilas Mill Road that links Avinashi Road with Trichy Road, V.K. Chinnasamy Road-Nava India Junction, CODISSIA Road linking Avinashi Road with Sathyamangalam Road. Now there was a need to develop the link road that connected Singanallur with Uppilipalayam.

Vehicles proceeding east from Trichy Road to Vellalore were forced to reach the Singanallur Junction, wait and take a right to proceed on Vellalore Road. This caused avoidable congestion at the junction.

If the Corporation were to establish a link between Trichy Road and Vellalore Road, it would reduce the burden at the junction.

Process initated

Sources in the Corporation said that the civic body would in the immediate future take up the road work as it had initiated the process.

The second of RAAC’s demand is a link between the airport and SIHS Colony to enable people moving on Trichy Road to have an access to the airport. At present, the access is only from Avinashi Road.

Palakkad Road-Sundakkamuthur Road link is the third of the roads that the Association has suggested to the Corporation. For people moving into the city from the West, the road would serve as an ideal alternative to Ukkadam.People could easily reach Ponnaiahrajapuram and move towards areas north of the city, said Mr. Raveendran.

He also said that a dirt track existed between the Kuniamuthur High School and Sundakamuthur Road, which the Corporation could easily develop as an alternative route.

The other roads that the RAAC had proposed were Avinashi Road – Ellai Thottam Road to enable people from Trichy Road to reach Sathyamangalam Road within the shortest possible time, Ponnaiahrajapuram-Sokkampudur link road, Ganapathy by-pass road, Peelamedu-Kurinji Hospital Road, Avinashi Road – Avarampalayam Road, P.N. Pudur-Edayarpalayam-Koundampalayam link road among others.Sources in the Corporation said that the civic body had plans to develop link and scheme roads in the city.

It had proposed to take up development of five roads every year.In the current year, the civic body would take up five roads and of those work for three had already commenced.
