Samsung comes up with e-waste recycle scheme

Oct. 13: Whenever Samsung gadget freak Mahesh updates his mobile phone with a new model, he dumps his old one in the draw that doesn’t close anymore. So, is the case with Veena, a housewife, who has no clue how to dispose her broken Samsung washing machine which even the dealer refused to take under exchange offer.

All they have to do now is to dump their worn out appliances at the nearest Samsung service centres. If the appliances are huge, they can make a call to these folks who will take the products away at no cost.

“For houses that are beyond the municipal limits, a minimum transportation fee will be collected,” says Ruchika Batra, general manager, Samsung, Southwest Asia.

With a view to ensuring proper disposal of e-waste, the company has come up with an initiative in partnership with the Central Pollution Control Board called Samsung Takeback and Recycle Program (STAR). Under this programme, the company’s service centres will collect Samsung brand of discarded goods and pass it on to government-approved e-waste recycling centres.

Ms Ruchika says, “291 such centres, located in 21 cities, will ensure safe disposal of these worn out products.”
