New system will ensure transparency in tax collection: Mayor

TIRUNELVELI: The Corporation has launched self assessment of property tax, which will enable residents to assess their building tax and get it finalised by the officials concerned within the next 24 hours.

Though the residents are prepared to pay tax to the civic body for new constructions, the local body continues to suffer huge revenue loss due to inexplicable delay on the part of officials concerned in finalising the quantum of tax to be imposed for every half-year. To avert this delay for the residents and augment the revenue for the civic body, the corporation has introduced the self assessment of property tax for newly buildings – both residential and commercial.

After downloading the self tax assessment application form from http://tirunelvelicorp.tn.gov.in, the residents should furnish information such as outer area of the building, use of the building (residential / commercial), nature of the roof (tiled / thatched / concrete / asbestos sheet), date of completion, ward number, place.

Besides, the residents should attach two copies of the land documents and two copies of building plan approval given by the corporation or the local planning authority along with the application and get an acknowledgement for submitting the application to the corporation.

A special tax assessment order will be given to the applicant on the same day after the Assistant Commissioner and the Revenue Inspector concerned inspected the building to check the veracity of the information given in the application. If any factual error in the application is found, the special tax assessment order given to the applicant earlier will be cancelled. Moreover, hefty fine will be imposed and new tax for the building will be levied.

“While this new system will ensure transparency in the building tax collection system, it will also enable the building owners to pay the taxes payable to the local body. Precisely, it is a win-win situation for all concerned,” Mayor A.L. Subramanian told reporters here on Monday after handing over the tax assessment orders to three applicants in the presence of Commissioner N. Subbaiyan, Executive Engineer V. Narayanan Nair and Deputy Mayor K. Muthuramalingam.
