Tirupur Corpn. begins drive to recover water tax arrears
The Corporation administration on Wednesday commenced a drive to disconnect water supply connections of the water tax defaulters as the outstanding water tax in Tirupur city had become a severe financial burden to the Corporation’s exchequer.
Official sources told The Hindu that water tax outstanding presently stood at Rs. 20 crore. On the day, three water connections of shops and establishments along Tirupur-Palladam road were disconnected by the Corporation officials for collectively not paying water tax arrears to the tune of Rs. 71,216.
The sources said the drive would continue in the coming days as repeated notices to many consumers to pay the water tax arrears were evoking lukewarm response from them. Nallur Consumer Welfare Association president N. Shanmugasundaram said the crusades conducted in bits and pieces, as in the past, were not adequate any more if the administration wanted to wipe out fiscal deficit.
“The councillors also have a role in helping the administration get back the arrears. Instead of looking at their vote banks, they should assist the officials in initiating stringent crackdown at the tax defaulters,” he added.
Mr. Shanmugasundaram pointed out that even the power connection of the defaulters of water taxes could get disconnected as per the rules.
