Corporation opens additional tax collection centres

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation opened on Thursday two computerised tax collection centres to further decentralise collection and also to step it up in view of just a month-and-a-half left for the close of the financial year.
Mayor R. Venkatachalam and Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra opened the new centres at Varadarajapuram in Singanallur and at Ondipudur. Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, East Zone Chairman S.M. Samy, councillors and officials were present.
The Corporation said that the centre at Varadarajapuram was in the civic body’s marriage hall and the one at Ondipudur was in the office of the Sanitary Inspector. With these, East Zone now had four centres. It had only two so far while the other zones had four to five each. Now, the total number of computerised tax collection centres was 14. Two more would be opened in North Zone.
The Corporation wanted the people to pay taxes and water charges promptly as the civic body had provided collection centres as close to their residential areas as possible.
People were generally of the opinion that there was time till March 31 to pay the taxes. This invariably led to last-minute rush and punitive action, such as disconnection of water lines, by the Corporation for defaulting payment.
Till March 31, eight collection centres of the Corporation, functioning at the main and zone offices and at Sungam, Tatabad and Saibaba Colony receive tax payments everyday (including Saturday and Sunday) till 5 p.m. Property owners should make use of this facility and pay taxes immediately, the Corporation said.
