Civic body puts Neel Metal Fanalca on notice

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will take over conservancy operations from private conservancy firm Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF) in Wards 128 and 129 of Kodambakkam Zone from June 4, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Monday.

The civic body Council passed a resolution to this effect on Monday. This followed complaints from residents that the private firm's work in Adyar, Kodambakkam, Ice House and Pulianthope zones was not satisfactory. The Corporation also decided to take over the cleaning of bus route roads from Neel Metal Fanalca in these zones in a phased manner. Mr. Subramanian said that if the company did not improve its work, the Corporation would take over the Kodambakkam zone entirely and the other zones thereafter.

The civic body had entered into a seven-year contract with NMF and the company commenced operations on April 1, 2008. He said that Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin would distribute appointment orders to over 160 persons on compassionate grounds on Tuesday. Of this, 150 are being taken in as conservancy staff. The corporation would provide uniforms and training to these men.

The Council also passed a resolution requesting the State government to permit the civic body to recruit a total of 6,511 conservancy staff in the four zones under the control of NMF.
