May 25th, 2010
Chennai: After the successful drive to pick up mentally-ill persons from city’s streets, the Chennai Corporation on Monday announced a mission to make the city beggar-free.

Speaking to reporters after holding a consultative meeting with NGOs, Mayor M. Subramanian said that 18 NGOs have come forward to provide safe home and rehabilitate beggars wandering in the city roads and signals.

“The corporation would launch the drive from June when the beggars will be caught and handed over to the rehabilitation centres,” he said. He also said that 11 persons were handed over to their relatives after their details were uploaded in the corporation website.
