Civic body to function from new facility soon

L. Renganathan

Rs. 1.45-crore work is slated to be over by December

Public can have access to all wings under one roof

KARUR: The Karur Municipality is all set to function from a brand new building being constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.45 crore. The new building is coming up fast and is slated to be completed by December.

The work is being carried out with financial support from the State Government under the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund Scheme through which a sum of Rs. 60 lakh has been secured from the State Government as the first tranche.

Efforts were under way to get additional funds under the scheme as the Karur Municipality is not actually sitting on a pile of cash and the local body could not apportion enough money from the general fund on its own.

Old buildings razed

The old buildings that housed some sections of the Municipality have been pulled down to facilitate the construction of the new building in the same premises in the prime location of the town. With the construction of the new building, it would be possible to bring the various sections of the Municipality under one roof, official sources said. At present the departments are functioning in old, scattered buildings in the premises.

Two floors

As per the construction plans, the new building that would have a ground floor and one upper floor measuring 863 square metres each, would be completed by the end of January. Already the construction work has reached the first floor roof level.

The main feature of the new building is that the public could have access to all wings of the Municipality under one roof rather than run around for their civic needs. However it remains to be seen as what would be done to the Pethachi Mandapam where the council meetings are usually held.
