New combined water supply scheme planned

ERODE: The State Government will implement a new combined water supply scheme for the Erode Corporation shortly, District Collector T. Soundiah has said. Participating at the Local Administration Day celebrations organised by the Corporation here on Monday, the Collector said that Rs. 250 crore had been earmarked for the implementation of the new water supply scheme.

People in all parts of the Erode town would be able to get adequate supply of drinking water once the scheme was implemented, he said.

Water would be sourced from the Cauvery River in Ooratchi Kottai village for the new scheme, he added. Listing out various development programmes implemented by the government, the Collector said that sufficient funds had been allotted for the execution of water supply and sanitation programmes. Over Rs. 200 crore had been allotted to the Corporation for the implementation of an Under Ground Drainage scheme. The scheme was being implemented in the town in a phased manner, he added.

Earlier, he flagged off a massive rally at the Corporation premises. A large number of students and members of self-help groups participated in the rally and raised slogans explaining various development schemes implemented in the town. He distributed Rs. 10 lakh as welfare assistance. Mayor Kumar Murugesh presided over the celebrations. A. Ganesamoorthy, MP, NKKP Raja, MLA, Corporation Commissioner and senior officials were present. The Collector participated in the celebrations organised by the Veerappan Chatram Municipality at the Government Girls Higher Secondary school. Competitions were conducted for school students and prizes were distributed to winners.
