SALEM: Residents of Pachapatti in ward 40 in the city have urged the district administration and Salem Corporation to take up the desilting works of Raja Channel, which is chocked with plastic garbage.

The residents, who came to submit a petition to Collector here on Monday, pointed out that week-long rain had put them in distress as overflowing waters from near-by lakes flooded their residential localities, including Ashok Nagar.

“The people in 3 {+r} {+d} street are badly affected,” said a resident.

They said that whenever rain battered, their colony would be marooned. They had represented their plight to the Civic body umpteen times

. “But no concrete effort has been taken up so far,” they claimed. Many of the drainage and storm water channels had also been silted and became a dump yard for all sorts of garbage thus chocking the free flow of water from the locality.

“The water remains stagnated for weeks thus emanating foul smell causing serious health hazards to the residents,” they claimed. Recently, the Corporation attempted to drain out water but in vain.

They urged the administration to desilt the main Raja Channel so that the water in the area could be easily drained out.

“We need that work to be undertaken immediately,” said another resident. They all hoped that the district administration would find them a permanent solution to their vexatious issue.
