CHENNAI: Incessant rains crippled normal life in the city and suburban areas on Monday as many arterial roads were heavily inundated.

In the city’s commercial hub, T Nagar, many interior streets and roads were either fully submerged or heavily inundated beyond motorable.

Reports from Purasaiwalkam, Egmore, interior Triplicane, Kodambakkam, Adyar and Washermenpet said several roads from these areas were under knee-deep water.

Besides, the Corporation removed about 17 felled trees in Anna Nagar, Triplicane, Ashok Nagar, Nungambakkam, Raja Annamalaipuram, Indira Nagar and Gandhi Nagar.

EMU train services were also disrupted due to heavy waterlogging on tracks on the Beach-Tambaram sector and popular tourist spot in the city, Marina Beach, wore a deserted look.

Heavy rains also affected power supply in the city and suburbs. Supply interruptions were reported in Anna Nagar, Perambur, Vyasarpadi, Ambattur, Keelkattalai, Guindy, T Nagar, Purasaiwalkam, Pulianthope, Choolai, Thiruvotriyur and Chitlapakkam.

Mayor M Subramanian and civic body officials toured rain-hit areas and directed officials to speed up draining works.

Speaking to reporters during his whirlwind tour of rain-hit areas, Subramanian said, “To evacuate people from low-lying areas, inflatable boats have been kept ready and about 150 high-powered motors are on standby to drain out rain water from different parts of the city.”
