VELLORE: The Director of Census Operations, Tamil Nadu, S. Gopalakrishnan, conducted on Tuesday a training workshop for the Commissioner of the Vellore Corporation, and Commissioners of Municipalities and tahsildars in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts.

They would function as charge officers for the 2011 Census on the methodology for enumerating the people of the two districts during the second stage of the census to be undertaken from February 9 to 28, 2011. These charge officers would, later, conduct training for the actual enumerators.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said that the house listing and housing census and the creation of the National Population Register, which formed the first stage of Census 2011 was undertaken between June 1 and July 15, 2010. A total of 1.50 lakh enumerators would be involved in the actual census operations to be undertaken next year throughout Tamil Nadu while 27 lakh enumerators would be on the job throughout India.

He said that a detailed questionnaire has been prepared for eliciting details from the members of the households during the census.

He requested the public to cooperate with the Census staff in giving information since the Census formed the basis for the delimitation of constituencies and for formulating the policies of the Government of India on matters concerning implementation of literacy programmes and providing employment opportunities to the people.

The Director said that once the details have been collected in the format, the signature of the member of the household would be obtained on the questionnaire and a sticker pasted outside the house to indicate the completion of enumeration in a particular house.
