Local body by-elections on January 10

CHENNAI: The State Election Commission (SEC) has decided to hold by-elections on January 10 to 471 posts in rural local bodies and 52 posts in urban local bodies.

Of the total number of 523 posts, elections to 78 posts will be held on party basis.

The notification will be published on December 22. On the same day, the receipt of nomination will commence.

The last date for filing nominations is December 29 and withdrawals up to January 3. Counting will take place on January 12, according to a press release issued by the SEC on Tuesday.

Of the 471 posts in rural local bodies, 376 pertain to village panchayat ward members; 69 for village panchayat presidents and 26 for panchayat union ward members. In the case of urban local bodies, three are for corporation councillors; six for municipalities' councillors; seven for third grade municipal ward members and 36 town panchayat ward members.

Electronic voting machines will be used only in urban local bodies.
