‘Harvest rainwater, recharge water table’

A large number of schoolchildren participated in a rally to create awareness on rainwater harvesting taken out in the town on Tuesday.

K. Baskaran, Collector, flagged off the rally from railway station. The rally passed through Gandhiji Road, South Alankam, and reached the Cholan statue. The students carried placards with catchy slogans such as “rainwater harvesting today is protection of drinking water tomorrow”, “Harvest rainwater to improve groundwater”, “plant trees to get rain”, “no world without water”, “rain comes once in a while and groundwater will be there forever”.

Nearly 2,000 students from Jayam Para Medical College, Mannai Para Medical College, Our Lady Nursing College, Government ITI, Municipal Higher Secondary School, Kalyanasundaram Higher Secondary School, and Rajah’s Higher Secondary School, Christian Girls Higher Secondary School took part in the rally. Savithiri Goplal, Chairperson, Thanjavur Municipality, Ravichandran, Municipal Commissioner, Srinivasan, municipal engineer, and Shannmugha Prabhu, Susheela, Municipal councillors participated.
