Garbage collection programme for students receives good response

Staff Reporter

School students in Kovilpatti have collected 1,585 kilograms of garbage since the launch of the Kovilpatti Environment League on October 21.

K. Vijaya Karthikeyan, Sub-Collector of Kovilpatti, said on Tuesday that the Kovilpatti Environment League received good response from the students. Plastic waste, empty water bottles and paper strewn in and around 19 schools were collected by the volunteers.

The league volunteers had also been encouraged to plant 200 saplings in and around each school under the programme. The officials of the Kovilpatti Municipality, Department of Forests and Rotary Club representatives were monitoring the progress of the volunteers’ works, he noted.

Prizes were given to the volunteers at the valedictory function organised at the Rotary Club office.

The students of A.V. School had collected the maximum quantity of waste – 553 kg – followed by the students of Everest Mariappa Nadar School (161 kg) and the Government Girls Higher Secondary School (130.5 kg), Mr.Karthikeyan noted.

The garbage collected during the programme was dumped in a compost yard.
