Thanjavur Municipal Chairperson Savithiri Gopal is getting ready to adorn the Mayor’s robe soon, as the municipality has been upgraded into a corporation. Though the government order in this connection is being awaited, preparatory works have started already. On Monday, the municipal council passed a resolution approving the models of her robes, emblem and flag for the corporation, and a silver sceptre. The models have been sent to the government for approval.

Two types of robes have been finalised: red-colour one for important government functions and black-colour one for conducting corporation meetings. Made of velvet, the robes have been embellished with ornamental embroidery. The 5-foot high sceptre has been made of 2.75 kg of silver at a cost of Rs.1.57 lakh. Two or three models of emblems and flags of different colours representing the art, culture, and way of life of the people have been sent to the government for its approval, Ms.Gopal said. The Mayor will also wear a 108-sovereign gold aaram. The model for the mayor's chair has been approved by the council on Monday. “Like the people of Thanjavur, we too are eagerly awaiting the government order on upgradation of our city into a corporation,” said the councillors who approved the models.
