MADURAI: A rally and competitions for school children marked the Local Administration Day here on Sunday.
The Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, who distributed prizes to winners of elocution, essay writing and quiz competitions at a function organised by Madurai Corporation, said that Local Administration Day was observed with the objective of making the people aware of the role played by local bodies in development. Members of local bodies acted as a bridge between the government and people, she said.
In his presidential address, the Commissioner, S. Sebastine, said that a rally was taken out to inform the people about the various development activities taken up by the Corporation.
Adequate powers had been given to local bodies to execute the schemes required by them on their own, he said. According to a Corporation press release, the Local Administration Day rally was taken out from Tamukkam to Anna Maaligai.
