Local Administration Day celebrated in southern districts

Tuticorin: Tirunelveli Corporation organised Local Administration Day on its premises on Sunday.

A.L. Subramanian, Mayor, presided over the programme. A sum of Rs. 10.48 lakh was distributed by the Mayor to 59 beneficiaries under Integrated Housing and Slum Development Plan.

Speaking at a function, he said three drinking water schemes had recently been implemented on an outlay of Rs. 22.2 crore in the city.

Tuticorin

The Local Administration Day was observed by the Tuticorin Corporation on its premises here on Sunday. Presiding over the programme, Mayor R. Kasthuri Thangam said“The corporation officials have got increased responsibility to promote the developmental projects for the benefit of the people to a large extent. ”

As many as 1,440 works to the tune of Rs. 130 crore had been taken up since 2006 for augmenting development projects for the people in corporation limits. , the Mayor said.

As part of the celebrations, Corporation School conducted elocution, essay writing, drawing, Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam competitions.

Councillors and officials of corporation took part in tug-of-war and musical chair events to mark the occasion.

Nagercoil

Nagercoil Municipal Administration had been implementing various development and welfare measures for the people and creating awareness among them of the need to implement solid waste management, said Council chairman Ashokan Solomon.

Local Administration Day was observed in different parts of the district. While inaugurating a mass cleaning programme, the chairman said that the Government had allotted Rs. 1 crore for the construction of a subway from Meenakshipuram Anna bus stand to Sir C.P.Ramasamy Aiyer Park. The work would be completed within a month.

The municipality was exploring ways to implement underground drainage system with the financial assistance from World Bank and feasibility studies were going on for bringing water from Ulakkaiaruvi and Thamiraparani for the residents of Nagercoil town, he said.

It has been decided to carry out mass cleaning programme throughout Kanyakumari district for three days from Sunday.
