Delhi Sports complexes: A success story

THE Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) have been playing a vital role not just in creating a huge network of sports facilities, but also in identifying and training budding sports talent in the national capital.

The sports complexes, playing fields, multi-gyms, fitness trails and golf courses that DDA has created all over the city have given to professional sportsmen and amateurs the right infrastructure to hone their talent.

There are 13 multi-sports complexes, one mini-sports complex, two golf courses and 39 multi-gyms out of which 26 are in green areas and 13 in sports complexes including two ladies’ multi-gyms, 26 playfields with a total area of 96.102 hectares, and 13 swimming pools.

The sports complexes are at Siri Fort, Saket, Rohini, Ashok Vihar, Hari Nagar, Paschim Vihar, Poorvi Delhi, Yamuna, Pitampura, Qutab Golf Cour se, Jasola, Chilla and Dwarka, Daba Gang Nath, Munirka, Bhalaswa Golf Course and Vasant Kunj — acro ss the length and breadth of the capital.

The sports complexes are membership- oriented. Various types of memberships are available, including on “pay-and-play” basis for anyone who wants to avail the sports facilities.

Funds for the maintenance of the DDA complexes are generated from various sources, including members’ monthly fee and allied collected from licensing out of snack bars, etc.

At these complexes, coaching facilities are also available in various disciplines like tennis, cricket, squash, aerobics, swimming, skating, yoga, taekwondo/karate, table tennis, horse riding, multi-gym and golf.

While major development work and upgradation of facilities are done by the DDA, minor improvements are made through funds generated from within the sports complexes.

In addition to coaching in various sports being provided on a regular basis throughout the year, special coaching camps are organ ised during summer and winter holidays for schoolchildren.

Sports initiatives by the NDMC include five modern swimming pools, playgrounds in almost all schools, an indoor stadium with modern facilities and a hockey ground that confirms to international specifications.

Plus, there is the Talkatora swimming pool.

In most densely populated colonies, youth centres and community halls with built-in sports facilities have been erected and financial grants are being provided to resident welfare associations for holding sports events.
