Local body representatives honoured

TIRUNELVELI: Collector M. Jayaraman honoured local body representatives in appreciation of role played by them in rehabilitating child labourers by rescuing them and admitting them in special schools being run by National Child Labour Project.

As employing children below the age of 14 is a punishable offence, the children rescued from business establishments are being admitted to special schools before being shifted to regular schools. In Tirunelveli district, a total of 4,596 children have been rehabilitated and another 4,839 children given life and vocational education.

Tirunelveli Corporation councillors S.V. Suresh (ward 4), Pon. Thangaraj (ward 5), Jebarani Kennedy (ward 21), S. Pandikumar (ward 26) and Balasubramanian (ward 53), K.K.C. Prabhakara Pandian of Ambasamudram municipality, Radhakrishnan of Veeravanallur town panchayat, Esakki Pandi of Kallidaikurichi town panchayat, Murugan Subramanian of Manimuthar town panchayat and Shanmugavel of Mannaarkovil village panchayat received the mementoes from the Collector.
