Tirupur: To ensure supply of chevon (i.e. goat meat) and mutton (i.e. sheep meat) according to standards of food production set by the government, the Tirupur Corporation has opened a modern slaughter house at a cost of Rs. 51 lakh.

City Engineer K. Gautaman told The Hindu that Rs. 10 lakh was allocated by the State Government from the corpus created under Part-II scheme and the rest taken from the Corporation exchequer. The abattoir has been equipped with gadgets and provisions to slaughter 300 goats and sheep/hogget a day in a humane manner and handle the meat hygienically.

The edifice has an entrance to take the animals inside and an exit to remove the dressed carcasses and offal.

The other salient features are a holding pen for animals awaiting slaughter, a guttery-cum-hare store to empty intestinal contents besides a room for veterinarian and facilities to store the skin till it is transported to tanneries.

An effluent tank has been established on the abattoir premises to collect wastes generated before it could be taken away for safe disposal.

City Health Officer K. R. Jawaharlal said establishment of the modern abattoir would be helpful to prevent health hazards.
