CHENNAI: Work on the flyover at Rangarajapuram is expected to be completed by October, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Tuesday.

Speaking to mediapersons after inspecting the work, he said that on completion it would help reduce congestion on Arcot Road. The facility is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.30.92 crore. It will have three arms and will be 962 metres long.

Once commissioned, the vehicles from Bazullah Road, T. Nagar, bound for the Kodambakkam area would have to take a left turn at the junction of Vivek & Co showroom and then the flyover and get off at Subramania nagar.

In the other direction, the vehicles have to use the arm of the flyover from Railway Border Road to reach Bazullah Road, Mr.Subramanian explained. So far construction of 29 piers and nine of the 25 deck slabs have been completed, he added. Officials, including Corporation Commissioner (incharge) Ashish Chatterjee were present during the inspection.

Though work order for construction of the flyover was issued in January 2008, the work could commence only in July that year after Chennai Metrowater shifted its lines. The flyover is being constructed by the Corporation along with Southern Railway. There were some issues with the Railways which took a couple of months to sort but now all issues had been settled clearing the decks for speeding up of work, Corporation officials said.
