Chennai: Encouraged by the response evoked among Chennaiites, the state government on Sunday extended the low-budget eateries, Amma canteens, to other corporations in the state.

Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, as announced in the Assembly a few weeks ago, launched 90 new canteens in nine corporations, 10 each, from the secretariat through video-conferencing. Besides, she also introduced the much-awaited breakfast menu inclusion of pongal-sambar, and curry leaves rice and lemon rice for lunch at Chennai’s 200 canteens.

The Amma canteens, aimed at providing healthy food at affordable price, are bound to cheer hundreds of workers, poor and middle-income groups belonging to the nine corporations - Madurai, Tiruchy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tirupur, Thoothukudi, Vellore and Erode – who would get to taste the south Indian fare of idli–sambar in the mornings, while sambar rice and curd rice would form the lunch menu.

This launch follows the announcement made by Jayalalithaa in the Assembly on May 16 that the ‘instant hit’ Amma canteens would be extended to nine other corporations. At present, each city would get 10 eateries, in all 90 canteens, which would be extended to other parts of these corporations, based on the response from the public.

The budget canteens launched in Chennai February this year became a smash hit among labourers, migrant workers and other sections of society as idlis sold for Rs1 a piece, curd rice for Rs 3 and sambar rice for Rs 5.

This apart, the CM also kept her word by extending the menu  by introducing pongal-sambar, healthy curry leaves rice and sumptuous lemon rice dishes, all priced at Rs 5 a plate. Chennai budget eateries would soon include chappathi (rotis) and dhal in their menu.

Chief secretary Sheela Balakrishnan and Maws secretary Phanindra Reddy were present at the function.

From Sunday, idli is available for Re. 1 per piece, ‘sambar’ rice for Rs. 5 and curd rice for Rs. 3 in Vellore.

These subsidised food items will be sold at the 10 different Amma Canteens that have been opened in Vellore Corporation on Sunday under the Annalakshmi Scheme of the Tamil Nadu Government.

Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare A. Mohammed Jhan inaugurated the canteens near the MLA’s office in Vellore and near the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School in Gandhinagar.

He also inaugurated the sale of food in the above canteens in the presence of Vellore Collector P. Sankar; Mayor P. Karthiyayini; MLA V.S. Vijay; Deputy Mayor V.D. Dharmalingam; Commissioner Janaki Raveendran; and City Health Officer Priyamvadha.

The eight other places in Vellore where the Amma Canteens were opened are Neduntheru in Kaspa, near the Corporation shops in Viruppakshipuram in Arni Road, Beedi Workers’ Colony in Sathuvachari, Bharathi Nagar in Cuddalore-Chithoor Road, Corporation Shopping Complex opposite to the Collectorate, Venkatapuram Road in Alamelu Mangapuram, near Corporation School in Bagayam and Market High School in Kosapet.

The Amma Canteens were located in the Corporation’s existing community centres in most places, while they are functioning in new buildings that have been constructed in the other places. In two places where the flooring of the buildings was yet to be completed, i.e., Alamelu Mangapuram and Bharathi Nagar, food was prepared in a nearby place belonging to the Corporation and brought to the canteens.

A visit to the canteen near the Vellore MLA’s office revealed that the canteen comprises a big dining hall, counters for supplying food, a kitchen, a service area and a room for washing vessels. The kitchen is equipped with three huge gas stoves, a refrigerator and a machine for preparing the idli flour.

Laddus were distributed to the visitors to the canteen on Sunday.

All the 10 canteens would function from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Three hundred plates of sambar rice, 300 plates of curd rice and 1,200 idlis would be prepared daily in each canteen, says a release issued by the Vellore Corporation.

No parcels

A notice board in the canteen near the MLA’s office says that parcels of food items would not be given, which means that the visitors would have to eat the food at the canteen itself.

Amma Unavagams, the budget canteens which have proved a hit in Chennai, opened to an overwhelming response from city residents on Sunday. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa declared open the canteens through videoconferencing from Chennai.

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation will be in charge of maintaining and running the canteens in the city. The canteens have been set up at Jan Bazaar, Kuppankulam, Rockins Road, Puthur Overhead Water Tank, Anna Nagar Overhead Water Tank, Jaganathapuram, Viragupettai, Melkalkandaar Kottai, and Salai Road, Woraiyur. Ms.Jayalalithaa will inaugurate the Unavagam in Srirangam, during a visit to her constituency on Monday.

The canteens will function between 7:00 and 10:00 am and 12 noon to 3:00 pm. An idli is priced at Re.1, sambhar rice at Rs.5 and curd rice at Rs.3. The menu is likely to be expanded further to cater to the needs of the public.

“I’m happy that Amma Unavagam has finally been inaugurated in Tiruchi. As soon as I heard about it, I rushed here with my two daughters to sample the food. It’s affordable and tasty too,” said Kalarani Balasubramaniyan, a housewife. The fact that there is no parcel service available at the canteen is disheartening for the public, especially patients admitted at the Government Hospital in the city. “It would be useful for patients if they could get food during the night and if a parcel service was available here,” said Sivagami Ayyappan, who visited the Amma Unavagam near the hospital.

T.P.Poonachi, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, A. Jaya, Mayor, P.Kumar, MP, R.Manoharan, Government Chief Whip, and N.R. Sivapathy and M. Paranjothi were present at Rockins Road Amma Unavagam during the inaugural.
