Menu expansion a welcome move, say patrons; officials say new dishes may be in by month-end.

In summer, it is normal for curd to sour as the mercury rises. But at Chennai Corporation’s 200 budget restaurants, the curd rice, at Rs. 5 per plate, continues to melt in the mouth.

The self-help groups (SHGs) running these restaurants buy fresh curd every morning from local Aavin milk parlours to ensure that customers are not left with a tangy aftertaste. And as the popularity of these eateries soars, they are set to get a more varied menu.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly that more dishes would be brought in, and an evening menu too, would be introduced.

Corporation officials said everything was already in place to start the supply of dishes including pongal and various kinds of rice, in about 10 days.

But the decision on when to start serving these new dishes is yet to be taken. Chapathis however, will make an appearance on September 1, an official said.

He added that the introduction of these new items is expected to reduce the consumption of idlis (at Re. 1 each) at the canteens.

Another customer also welcomed the move to introduce more items to the menu.

“When I retire next year I will get a pension of Rs. 1,900 a month. This will be hardly to make ends meet. These restaurants will be really useful to me,” he said.

Munuswamy, a watchman who works on Habibullah Road, and had come in for lunch to the Amma Unavagam in T. Nagar, said the portions served were generous.

“One portion of sambar rice and one of curd rice makes for a good meal, at Rs. 8,” he said, adding that he was happy with the decision to add items to the menu.

But not everyone is satisfied with the service.

An autorickshaw driver from Abhiramapuram complained that the SHG members did not wash their hands before serving food. He also said the women hurled abuses at each other in front of customers.

His complaint has been forwarded to the Corporation Commissioner.

The job of the SHG members includes preparing and serving food, and cleaning up before and after breakfast and lunch.

Lalitha, a resident of Teynampet, said she worked at the T. Nagar restaurant from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a salary of Rs. 300 a day.

Around 2,500 idlis (at Re. 1 per idli), and 1,000 plates each of sambar and curd rice are sold daily at the eateries. About 450 customers are served every morning, officials said.

At present, the Corporation’s sanitary inspectors supervise the maintenance of the restaurants. They also ensure that garbage is picked up, and the surrounding areas cleaned.

Frugal fare at nominal prices, but manna for those living on shoestring budgets: Amma Unavagam, which has proved to be a hit with Chennai residents, will shortly reach nine other cities.

Budget restaurants that serve one-rupee idlis and sell low-cost plates of sambar and curd rice for lunch, will come up in Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tirupur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode by the end of this month.

These nine municipal corporations will have 10 restaurants each, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa informed the Assembly on Wednesday. And the fare in Chennai is set to expand too. The menu of Amma Unavagams in Chennai will include pongal, variety rice preparations, besides chapathi served with kurma. These budget canteens now function in 200 wards in Chennai, where idli is sold for one rupee, sambar rice for Rs 5 and curd rice for Rs 3. Breakfast is available from 7 am and 12 noon. Lunch will be served till 3 pm.

Following requests for providing varying fare, the canteens will serve pongal and sambar for Rs 5 in the morning and tamarind rice or curry leaf rice during lunch for Rs 5. As it will take some time to procure chapathi-making machines, the dish will make its entry only in September. Two chapathis with dhal or kurma will cost just Rs.3.

Two injured eagles (Indian Black Kites) and a crow were rescued from different parts of the district on Saturday, which was also World Migratory Bird Day. The birds are under treatment at the Coimbatore Corporation Zoo.

According to Corporation Zoo director K. Asokan, one of the eagles was rescued from Selvapuram after two people spotted the bird lying on the roadside entangled in a heap of garbage. Estimated to be around four years old, he said that the kite’s right leg was completely paralysed and had to be amputated. If severe arterial disease was left untreated, he said that lack of blood circulation will subsequently increase the pain. Tissues in the leg would die due to lack of oxygen and nutrients, which will lead to infection and gangrene. In some cases, gangrene can be very dangerous as the infection can spread throughout the body and become life-threatening.

Now, after the amputation, he said, it had recovered enough to stand on a leg and fly. As the bird was reluctant to leave, he said, it will be kept in the zoo for the time being.

The other eagle, Dr. Asokan said, was around a year old and was rescued from Podanur. Corneal opacity had formed in its left eye which was affecting its vision. It can be rectified only by surgery and the zoo was in the process of getting expert opinion for the purpose. Further, a two-week-old crow with congenital defects in both its legs was also rescued and brought to the zoo. It was now being fed at the zoo, he added.

Cat snake rescued

A one-and-a-half-year-old common cat snake was rescued from Somayampalayam near Thadagam in the district on Saturday by the members of Mother of All Snakes organisation.

According to K. Santosh Kumar and R. Rajesh Kumar from the organisation, they received a call at around 11.30 a.m. on Saturday and rescued the snake within the next hour or so. It was found to be a male adult and was in a good condition.

It was released into the forest areas near Anaikatti on the same day at around 4 p.m. after informing the Forest Department.

Mr. Santosh said that this species was found only in the Western Ghats. Cat snakes are mildly venomous and will not affect humans. The poison was lethal only on its prey such as geckos and frogs. It lays eggs, mostly between four and eight at a time, in the tree burrows.

The organisation could be contacted at the following mobile no: 9976776539.
