Construction of new municipal office inspected

PERAMBALUR: Collector M. Vijayakumar inspected the construction works of the new municipal office near the new bus stand in the town on Tuesday at an outlay of Rs.85 lakh and directed the officials to complete the work by February next.

The municipal office building is being constructed under the Infrastructure Gap Filling scheme 2007-08.

While the government has sanctioned Rs.40 lakh for this project, the remaining sum of Rs.45 lakh is contributed by the local municipality. Surendar Sha, Municipal Commissioner, explained the progress of the work.

The State Information and Public Relations Department has planned to construct an exhibition to explain the various achievements of the government departments at the municipal ground from December 25.

An exhibition of the products made by the women self help groups organised by the Mahalir Thittam will also commence at the same venue. Mr. Vijayakumar inspected the ground this morning.

Local body by-elections on January 10

CHENNAI: The State Election Commission (SEC) has decided to hold by-elections on January 10 to 471 posts in rural local bodies and 52 posts in urban local bodies.

Of the total number of 523 posts, elections to 78 posts will be held on party basis.

The notification will be published on December 22. On the same day, the receipt of nomination will commence.

The last date for filing nominations is December 29 and withdrawals up to January 3. Counting will take place on January 12, according to a press release issued by the SEC on Tuesday.

Of the 471 posts in rural local bodies, 376 pertain to village panchayat ward members; 69 for village panchayat presidents and 26 for panchayat union ward members. In the case of urban local bodies, three are for corporation councillors; six for municipalities' councillors; seven for third grade municipal ward members and 36 town panchayat ward members.

Electronic voting machines will be used only in urban local bodies.

Waterlogging: Stress on long-term solutions

 

THOOTHUKUDI: The Central team visiting rain-affected districts on Saturday stressed on the need for long-term plans for Thoothukudi.  “We will recommend to the Union Government to go in for planning and implementation of long-term solutions for the city as Thoothukudi is situated below the sea level,” said the team here.  The team comprising Director in charge of Department of Agriculture K Manoharan, Superintending Engineer in Central Water Commission R Thangamani and Superintending Engineer in Department of Road Transport Digvijay Mishra visited the Thoothukudi Corporation area first and later proceeded to rain-affected areas in Vilathikulam and Ettayapuram taluk.  Briefing reporters, the team members said the problem of rainwater stagnation in residential areas called for proper drainage facilities. The team acknowledged that the district was badly affected by the rains. “The district administration has demanded Rs 255 crore for carrying out relief measures in the district. Of this, Rs 28 crore was sought for executing immediate relief measures,” team members said.

“Our recommendations to the Centre will include execution of works on both temporary and permanent basis,” they added.  Earlier, the team visited Soorangudi, Kumarasakkanapuram, Pillaiyarnatham, Padarnthapuli among other villages and interacted with the affected farmers.  The Central team also acknowledged that crop damage suffered in the district was severe, to the tune of Rs 15 crore. “The State government has given Rs 8 crore, of which R1.5 crore was disbursed to people as assistance,” the team underlined.

Minister for Social Welfare P Geetha Jeevan and Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor R Kasthuri Thangam accompanied the team in areas within the corporation limits.
