TN: Rain pours non-stop misery

CHENNAI: Incessant monsoon rains hit life across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, for the second day on Monday, heavily flooding low-lying pockets of the capital city.

As the weatherman predicted intensified rainfall in the state’s northern coastal districts, the government declared a holiday for schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts on Tuesday as well. Also, the Madras University has postponed its degree examinations for undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses.

Several ministers, including Deputy chief minister M K Stalin, are on a tour of the flood-affected parts of the state to assess the damage to crops, property and lives.

EMU services in Chennai were disrupted as water stagnated on tracks along the Beach-Tambaram stretch. Roads wore a deserted look as schools were closed and people largely preferred to stay indoors.

Chennai Mayor M Subramanian surveyed the inundated areas, and said inflatable boats had been readied to evacuate people.

The worst-affected was the commercial hub T Nagar, where many streets and roads were either fully submerged or not motorable. Several pockets of Purasawalkam, Egmore, interior Triplicane, Kodambakkam, Adyar and Washermenpet too were under knee-deep water. Some 150 high-powered pump-sets are on standby to flush out rain water from different parts of the city.

Parts of Anna Nagar, Perambur, Vyasarpadi, Ambattur, Guindy, T Nagar and Purasa­walkam suffered power outages. Seventeen trees were uprooted, causing traffic jam in several areas of the city.

The Met office said the current spell of rains would continue for the next two days as the low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay off Sri Lankan coast was set to cross the Tamil Nadu coast.

Contempt case: Metrowater boss appears in HC

CHENNAI: Municipal Administration secretary Ashok Vardhan Shetty and chairman and managing director of Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board Rajesh Lakhoni on Monday appeared before the First Bench of the Madras High Court in connection with a contempt application seeking to punish them for not complying with its earlier orders.

Alleging that the authorities concerned had not taken seriously the interim orders passed on various earlier occasions by the Bench on the issue of elimination of manual clearing of sewage lines, A Narayanan, a social Worker in Virugambakkan, had filed the contempt application.

When the matter came up on November 24 before the Bench comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam, it directed the duo to appear before them on December 6 and file affidavits justifying their inaction on carrying out the orders.

Accordingly, the two officers appeared before the bench and filed affidavits on Monday.

The bench adjourned the matter by four weeks.

Waterlogged roads hit normal life

CHENNAI: Incessant rains crippled normal life in the city and suburban areas on Monday as many arterial roads were heavily inundated.

In the city’s commercial hub, T Nagar, many interior streets and roads were either fully submerged or heavily inundated beyond motorable.

Reports from Purasaiwalkam, Egmore, interior Triplicane, Kodambakkam, Adyar and Washermenpet said several roads from these areas were under knee-deep water.

Besides, the Corporation removed about 17 felled trees in Anna Nagar, Triplicane, Ashok Nagar, Nungambakkam, Raja Annamalaipuram, Indira Nagar and Gandhi Nagar.

EMU train services were also disrupted due to heavy waterlogging on tracks on the Beach-Tambaram sector and popular tourist spot in the city, Marina Beach, wore a deserted look.

Heavy rains also affected power supply in the city and suburbs. Supply interruptions were reported in Anna Nagar, Perambur, Vyasarpadi, Ambattur, Keelkattalai, Guindy, T Nagar, Purasaiwalkam, Pulianthope, Choolai, Thiruvotriyur and Chitlapakkam.

Mayor M Subramanian and civic body officials toured rain-hit areas and directed officials to speed up draining works.

Speaking to reporters during his whirlwind tour of rain-hit areas, Subramanian said, “To evacuate people from low-lying areas, inflatable boats have been kept ready and about 150 high-powered motors are on standby to drain out rain water from different parts of the city.”
