Tiruchi Corporation gets award

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi City Corporation has been adjudged the best among all the municipal corporations in the State for its achievement in the Flag Day collection during the year 2008.

The Corporation has registered a collection of Rs.15,03,500 against the target of Rs.7.15 lakh fixed for that year. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala presented Tamil Nadu Government's special shield and certificate of appreciation which was received by T. T. Balsamy, Commissioner of Tiruchi City Corporation in the presence of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Independence Day function held at Raj Bhavan in Chennai.

Councillors from Kumbakonam inspect development works

MADURAI: Twenty-three councillors and Chairman of Kumbhakonam Municipality Tamilazhagan, on Monday, inspected development works being carried out in the city.

Various works are being implemented in the city on an outlay of Rs. 931 crores under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. This included second Vaigai drinking water scheme, underground drainage work, check dams across Vaigai river and storm water drainage work.

Chief Engineer K. Sakthivel and Superintending Engineer R. Vijaykumar accompanied the visiting councillors.

Mayor honours civic staff

CHENNAI: Independence day was celebrated in the city by organisations and various d epartments on Sunday. City mayorM Subramanian hoisted the national flag at the Chennai Corporation and honoured 46 employees of the civic body for outstanding performance in carrying out their duties. Subramanian also gave away Rs 20,000 financial assistance each to 10 women.

At the independence day celebrations of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), five drivers having an accident-free record for over 15 years were honoured by transport secretary Atulya Misra, who presented a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each and certificates to them.

Southern Railway, as a part of independence day celebrations, organised a heritage steam locomotive run from Chennai Central to Avadi with the oldest working steam locomotive in the world.

Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifullah, judges of the madras high court, took part at the independence day celebrations organised by Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority.
