Tamil makeover for city streets

Tags: Renaming streets, World classical Tamil conference

June 14: Hashing and rehashing street names is still playing out in Chennai. First it was giving up British names and then it was dropping caste names, which led to very strange, mutilated names for streets and roads.

Now begins another exercise. Chennai corporation is targetting over 50 city streets that would be renamed in view of the upcoming world classical Tamil conference.

The streets would be named after Tamil authors, poets and scholars of different periods in another month-and-a-half, Chennai mayor M. Subramanian told DC adding that about 52 streets would be renamed initially.

The decision was taken at an all-party meeting at Ripon buildings on Monday. The resolution would be passed in the monthly council meeting on June 22, a day before the conference.

Another resolution, comprising the list of names that would be finalised after consulting the state government, would be tabled during next month’s council meeting. “Though there were a couple of streets named after a church and a vessel in which English sailors arrived in Madras, we chose not to rename or rather disturb them fearing communal backlash,” Mr Subramanian elaborated.

In order to make pronunciation easy, the corporation would also be avoiding difficult names like Seethalai Saathanar, an ancient Tamil poet. Streets would have names of familiar Tamil littérateurs like Elangovadigal who wrote Silapathigaram.

Speaking at an all-party meeting convened here on Monday, Mayor M. Subramanian said, “The European contributors to Tamil will also be recognised. Ellis Road will not be renamed because the person had translated Thirukkural.”

The civic body has made a list of 52 roads. After the council's approval for renaming 50 roads is obtained, the State government will make the final decision, said Mr.Subramanian.

Some of the important roads identified for renaming include Haddows Road, Harrington Road, Sterling Road, Mcnichols Road, Taylors Road, Ormes Road, Greams Road, Montieth Road, Pantheon Road, and Eldams Road.

The list includes Stringer Road, Umpherson Road, New Farrence Road, Stephensons Road, Cooks Road, General Collins Road, Frazer Road, Flowers Road, Millers Road, Balfour Road, Landons Road, Halls Road, Blackers Road, Adams Street, Erran Street, Emi Street, Casa Major Road, Molony Road, Wennells Road, Anderson Road, Moore's Road, Binny Road, Patullos Road, Whites Road, Woods Road, Westcott Road, Murrays Gate Road, New Boag Road, Madley Road, Jones Road, Jeenis Road, Burkit Road, De Silva Road and Leith Castle Road.

ERODE: Councillors, cutting across party affiliations, including the Deputy Mayor, resorted to a sit-in protest inside the council hall of the Erode Corporation on Thursday as the Mayor declared the meeting over within minutes after its beginning.

Mayor Kumar Murugesh, immediately after the beginning of the meeting, declared all resolutions passed and announced that the meeting was over. The Mayor left the hall even as the members including DMK councillors protested against the act.

Annoyed, a total of 34 councillors including Deputy Mayor Babu, 11 members of the DMK, 7 from AIADMK, 6 from Congress, 2 from MDMK, one from DMDK and 7 independents sat inside the hall demanding the Mayor to provide adequate opportunities to all the members of the council to express their views in the meeting.

Officials tried to pacify the agitators. But the councillors refused to leave the hall and had their lunch inside it. They stayed inside the council hall till late in the evening. Modakurichi MLA R.M. Palanisamy (Congress) met the agitating councillors and expressed his support for their protest.

The protest was withdrawn after officials had given assurance that adequate opportunities would be given to the councillors to express their views.

Earlier, in the morning, the Deputy Mayor, Congress councillors and a group of people staged a demonstration at the Corporation office demanding the civic administration to create adequate basic amenities in all the residential colonies in Ward 7. People said that a majority of the colonies in the ward lacked proper drainage facilities, drinking water supply provisions, street lighting and roads.

Despite repeated representations, the civic body had not taken any steps to sort out the issues in the ward, the Deputy Mayor said.
