Residents of Selathanaickerkadu in Ward 36 blocked Attur Main Road in Salem on Tuesday demanding drainage facilities.

SALEM: Residents of Selathanaikerkadu and Patanaicker Kadu in Ward 36 blocked traffic in the Salem-Chennai National Highways here on Tuesday demanding the Salem Corporation to provide them adequate drainage facilities.

The residents, more than 500 including women, blocked traffic on the busy Highways saying that despite continuous representations, the Civic body had not done anything for them.

With no drainage facility, the residents said that they had been facing severe hardships and particularly during the rainy season.

They also said that the waste and untreated water from a near-by hospital was causing severe health hazard to them.

“This is overflowing on the streets in the ward 36,” one of the women protestors pointed out.

Unless a proper drainage facility was provided, the people living in the ward would be forced to take a series of agitations, they said. Ward councillor V. Dharmalingam (Congress) and others took part in the agitation. Officials rushed to the spot and held talks with the protestors. Later after nearly 45 minutes of hold-up, traffic was restored in the highways.
