Mayor addresses meeting on monsoon preparedness

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will not permit road cuts, including by government departments, from October 1 to January, according to Mayor M. Subramanian.

Addressing a coordination meeting on monsoon preparedness on Friday, he said even small road cuts could lead to accidents during rain. “We need about a week for road repairs and therefore October 1 is the cut off date,” he said. Already around 220 km of roads in the city have been cut.

Mr. Subramanian urged the Metrowater to raise the height of manholes on concrete roads, to increase the quantity of chlorine in drinking water and make sewage pumping stations function round the clock during monsoon. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni urged the Fisheries and Agriculture and Fire and Rescue Services Departments to arrange adequate motors for pumping out water and boats to rescue stranded persons. The Metrowater was urged to ensure proper functioning of its sewage pumping stations in critical areas. The Mayor told the TNEB to form special squads to ensure that there are no electric shocks in spots where water stagnates. He directed the Highways Department to desilt its stormwater drains on Anna Salai and Poonamallee High Road and complete stormwater drain work on Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

Mr. Subramanian asked the Revenue Department officials to help remove obstructions on the Adyar at Keerai Thottam in Saidapet and at three spots on Virugambakkam Canal. The MRTS was asked to desilt blocks on Buckingham Canal beneath its service road. The Southern Railway has been directed to desilt Ainsley Canal and ICF Canal.

Local bodies support merger, pass resolution

Chennai
Sept. 24: With the government deciding to form new corporations by merging the local bodies adjoining Chennai corporation, the municipalities of Tiruvotti-yur, Manali and Kathivak-kam in the north are in fav-our of a merger with the city corporation. These municipalities have also passed a resolution in fav-our such a move.

Tiruvottiyur municipal chairman R. Jayaraman sa-id, “In the public hearing conducted by the CMDA in December last year, we de-manded that the governm-ent form a corporation with Tiruvottiyur as its headq-uarters or to merge us with Chennai corporation.” He said that a unanimous resolution to this effect was pa-ssed in the municipal council a few months ago. However, Manali municipality chairman R. Gnanasekar says that his local body would benefit more if it were merged with the proposed Avadi corporation.

According to former cha-irman of Alandur municipality R.S. Barathi, the new corporations would be a major boon for the suburban municipalities as it would help the government to work out comprehensive development plans. If the suburbs were integrated, construction of bridges, fl-yovers and drinking water schemes could be executed through a single local body reducing the bureaucratic procedures and constructi-on time, Mr Bharathi ad-ded.

Meanwhile, the proposal for extending the Chennai corporation limits brought mixed reactions from the public and administrators.

Chennai, Sept. 23: Chief minister M. Karunanidhi and deputy CM M.K. Stalin on Wednesday discussed the feasibility of setting up a greater Chennai corporation. During the meeting, presentations on the proposed Tambaram and Avadi corporations were also discussed.

According to sources, the government was keen on expanding the Chennai corporation limit from 176 to 760 sq kms. Corporation of greater Chennai is likely to be created by linking a few suburban municipalities like Manali, Kathivakkam, Sholinganallur, Alandur and Tiruvottiyur.

The proposal is pending before the CM and an announcement would be made in a few days. Presentations on setting up a new Tambaram and Avadi corporation were also discussed, a senior official who attended the meeting told Deccan Chronicle.

The setting up or expansion of corporations would become feasible only after the local bodies elections, in 2011. Municipal administration and water supply department secretary Niranjan Mardi and Chennai corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni participated.
