Park on banks of the Cooum to be opened next month

CHENNAI: A park spread over 7,300 square metres, being developed by the Chennai Corporation on the banks of the Cooum along Langs Garden Road in Pudupet, will be opened next month.
The facility will be 730-metre long and 10-metre wide. It is coming up on a land that was encroached on by about 100 huts. The encroachments were removed a year ago, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Wednesday after reviewing the work on the park.
Besides constructing stormwater drain and compound wall, the Corporation would also provide facilities such as ornamental lights, benches and walkers' track. The park would have three entry points. Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is expected to inaugurate the park, which is being developed at a cost of Rs.1.34 crore.
The work is part of the Cooum restoration project. Zonal committee chairman M. P. Anbudurai, councillors and Corporation officials, were also present during the Mayor's visit.
The Mayor also reviewed the work to construct houses and provide basic amenities at Saidapet and Ekkaduthangal. The Chennai Corporation is implementing the work as part of the Basic Services for Urban Poor scheme of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The project, taken up at a cost of Rs.127.43 crore, is to build houses in 44 slum areas and provide basic facilities in 236 localities.
