Corporation Council passes 29 resolutions at meeting

CHENNAI: A total of 29 resolutions, including one approving the bid of a contractor to construct stormwater drains in Royapuram watershed at a cost of Rs.25.11 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, were passed at the Chennai Corporation Council meeting here on Monday.

Upgrading of high schools

Resolutions pertaining to upgrade of high schools in Kolathur and Subbaroyan Street to higher secondary and two middle schools in MMDA Colony to high schools, supply of uniform materials to Chennai School students and approval of bid for construction of flyover at Mint at a cost of Rs.19.40 crore were also passed.

Leader of Opposition Saidai P. Ravi urged the civic body to collect property tax from private schools that refused to accept the fee amount fixed by the State government.

He said that the civic body must bring in some kind of regulation for the shops on the Marina beach that sell food stuff.

R. Elumalai of Ward 67 said that the civic body must set up water purification plants at playgrounds and parks to provide safe drinking water to the public.

Councillor of Ward 59, Devi alias Devaki, said that owing to contamination of drinking water, residents of several areas in north Chennai had been admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital with complaints of cholera. Mylapore MLA S.Ve. Shekar said the work for construction of two gassifiers at the burial ground in Mylapore for which he had sanctioned Rs.80 lakh from his MLA Development funds had not been taken up.

He urged the civic body to construct a foot overbridge near Andhra Mahila Sabha on Durgabhai Deshmukh Road.
