CHENNAI: The State government has completed a study on taking up an ambitious plan, which will ensure overall development of 8 town panchayats among 562 of these Urban Local Bodies on a trial basis. The study is for the proposed Town Investment Plan for Sembakkam, Perungudi and Sholinganallur town panchayats in Kancheepuram district, Gandhi Nagar and Allapuram in Vellore district, Chengam and Polur in Tiruvannamalai district and Kottakuppam in Villupuram district. The study was prepared by a private consultant appointed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Financial Infrastructure Services Limited (TNUFSIL), officials at the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply say.

Plan objective

The objective of the plan is to assess the project proposals put up by the respective town panchayats and identify “gaps in services,” taking into account the population growth and also the direction of growth of these towns, and formally outline the short and long-term infrastructure needs. Each of these 8 town panchayats is expected to pass a council resolution following which the State government will give its nod for implementing the scheme.
