More foot overbridges with lifts planned

One of the proposed six foot overbridges will come up on Gandhi Irwin Road near Egmore railway station.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will construct foot overbridges with lifts at six more locations.

They will come up on Rajaji Salai, Gandhi Irwin Road, Durgabai Deshmukh Road, NSC Bose Road and on Wallajah Road.

Apart from widening bridges in six areas, nine vehicular subways and bridges, including those on Madley Road, T. Nagar, and on Tiruvottiyur High Road, Tondiarpet, would be strengthened. These works would be taken up at a total cost of Rs.14.20 crore.

According to the budget proposals of the civic body for 2010-11, an orchid garden spread over one acre would be created near the swimming pool on the Marina at a cost of Rs.1 crore. A mist house with tropical varieties of plants would be set up.

Horticulturist G. Ramakrishnan said when something of such a large scale was being suggested, utmost care was needed. However, experts in the field said that the beach might not be the suitable location.

Flower show featuring different kinds of flowers from across the country would be held in the city. As an effort to improve the garbage dumping yard in Otteri, spread over 10.5 acre, an evergreen tropical urban forest consisting of 50 varieties of medicinal plants will be thrown open to public.

Besides developing vacant spaces in 10 locations as parks, the Corporation also proposes to provide free yoga training to visitors in 18 parks between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. A cricket coaching centre would be opened on Greams Road.
