CHENNAI: Work orders for construction of stormwater drains in three packages under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) have been issued by the Chennai Corporation.

On completion of the projects, residents of areas in Velachery and Kolathur that are prone to flooding will get relief, he added.

He said that the award of contracts for a couple of other packages would be placed before the Corporation Council on April 29. Tenders for Nungambakkam area, South Buckingham Canal, Virugambakkam canals and Otteri Canal are being processed, he added.

The civic body and the Public Works Department would jointly implement the Rs.1,448-crore scheme for flood prevention. The Corporation's share in this would be Rs.815 crore to strengthen minor drains and construct stormwater drains.
