Anna Nagar tower park to open in a month


CHENNAI: Dr Visveswaraya Tower Park in Anna Nagar that was being renovated at an estimated cost of Rs 5.38 crore would be opened for the public in a month, Mayor M Subramanian said on Monday.

After inspecting the ongoing works at the 15.5-acre park, the Mayor said, “Besides total renovation of the historical park in the heart of Anna Nagar, the construction of a meditation court, sculpture court and an open air theatre with a capacity of 500 people would be completed in a month.” The construction of Lake Island with a plaza at a small pond inside the park’s northern corner, raising of Korean grass on 2,100 sq metre at both the entrances and children play area have been completed, the Mayor said.

Residents were requesting the Corporation to renovate the park, which was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Annadurai in 1968 to mark the World Trade Fair that were organised there.

Bougainvillea Park in Anna Nagar East, Tower Park, were the other sprawling lung space for Anna Nagar and its adjacent localities. Ashish Chatterjee, Commissioner (in charge), N Ramalingam, ruling party leader in Corporation Council and S Suresh Babu, zonal chairman, accompanied the Mayor during the inspection.
