COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu has signed 25 Memoranda of Understanding for investment of Rs.46,091 crore in the last three-and-a-half years, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said here on Sunday.

Inaugurating the Hansen Drives plant here, he said the State government approved 12 structured packages during this period. This attracted the investment and would provide 2.72 lakh jobs.

In an effort to strengthen industries and support entrepreneurs, the government would soon set up a financial city near Chennai. It was also taking steps to establish an aerospace park. The government was waiting for the Centre’s approval for the single-window system that would simplify procedures for industries to start new units.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the plant he inaugurated here on Sunday would have an investment of Rs.1,500 crore over five years and provide direct employment to 800 people and indirect employment to 200. The plant would manufacture 1,750 units of gearboxes for windmills in the first year. The government would provide several benefits such as assistance for training, capital and infrastructure subsidy.

The State had availability of wind and 1,682 MW was the installed capacity of windmills added in the last three years. This took the total installed capacity of windmills in the State to 4,579 MW. This met eight per cent of the State’s energy needs.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy said all villages in the State had power supply. The State would not have power cut after 2011 because of the efforts taken by the government to generate about 10,000 MW by 2013. Tamil Nadu would be able to sell 2,500 MW power to other States by 2012. It was now buying 1,000 MW at Rs.7 to Rs.10 a unit.

The plant inaugurated on Sunday would make gearboxes for up to three MW wind turbines. The Union government envisaged generation of 25,000 MW solar energy by 2025 and 4,000 MW in another five years. Establishing a solar energy generation plant cost Rs.16 crore for one MW and this would come down in future. He urged the need for focus on solar energy generation.

Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Pongalur N. Palanisamy said industries such as Hansen would help in ensuring clean environment.

Rajeev Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Department of Industries, said the unit had come up on 61 acres in the SEZ.

Some of the major initiatives that helped the development of industries in the State were the new industrial policy released in 2007, the MSME policy, online facility to receive industrial entrepreneur memorandum certificate and the launch of industry portal (www. investingintamilnadu.com).

Chief Executive Officer of Hansen Transmissions Ivan Brems said Tamil Nadu had a long coastline to tap wind energy.

IMPROVEMENTS IN STORE: The Corporation plans to re-lay the walkers’ track and create roadside parks to beautify Race Course in the city. —

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation is planning a total facelift to the public amenities at Race Course in the city, where the famous walkers’ track and some spaces nearby are fitness zones for a large number of people.

The Corporation wants the track re-laid and roadside parks developed by private parties under a design, build, operate and transfer scheme.

Track

The walkers’ track has concrete pavement blocks. Earlier, it had a tar top.

Now, the Corporation will look for the best option in the expressions of interest that it has invited from private parties.

The Corporation also wants energy-saving lamps to be installed and maintained along the 2.5 km circular walkers’ track.

At present, 70 sodium vapour lamps have been installed along the track.

Now, the Corporation looks to have ornamental energy-saving lights at every 90 feet so that both the track and the Race Course Road are illuminated well.

The lights should be installed as per the instructions of the Corporation and the private parties will operate and maintain these.

The green spaces, areas where the public will be allowed and the others they will not have access to will be clearly demarcated.

Advertisement boards can be put up along the walkers’ track and on street light poles as per the guidelines of the Tamil Nadu Hoardings Act, 1938.

According to the Corporation, companies that are into advertising, landscaping or eco-system management can take up the works.

Companies

An official said on Tuesday that two companies had submitted expression of interest to the Corporation.

The Technical Advisory Committee of the Corporation that consisted of officials including the Superintending Engineer and City Engineer, would scrutinise these and decide on the basis of the bid amount and the experience of the private parties in creating similar facilities elsewhere.

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation launched on Monday a Rs. 4.15 crore project to create roadside parks and lay pavements for pedestrians at 21 places as part of efforts to beautify the city before the World Classical Tamil Conference in June this year.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra and Deputy Mayor N. Karthik launched the works.

Footpaths

The Mayor said many areas in the city did not have good footpaths and pedestrians faced the risk of getting hit by vehicles.

He cited the case of Dr. Nanjappa Road that had heavy traffic.

Apart from town bus services, buses to Salem, Tiruchi and Madurai took this stretch from Avanashi Road to reach the Central Bus Stand.

This would be among five to six main roads that would be provided with good pavements.

The Mayor said as many green spaces as possible would be created before the conference. South Zone Chairman P. Pynthamil Pari provided an image of a pavement and roadside park that would come up in his zone.

As many as 15 important locations, including junctions, would have parks.

The parks and pavements would be among a slew of measures that the Corporation was embarking upon to showcase Coimbatore as a clean and green city during the conference.

Slum-free city

The image-building exercise also included a project to create a slum-free city.

Recently, the State Government allocated Rs.26 crore to widen and relay 71 roads in the city before the conference.

Official sources said most of the works being taken up now were aimed at improving the infrastructure facilities in the city, mainly the roads, so that traffic bottlenecks did not crop up during the conference.
