DIRE NEED: Both pedestrians and motorists will benefit from the proposed FOB.

CHENNAI: Work on construction of a foot overbridge on the busy Taluk Office Road in Saidapet will commence within a few days with the Chennai Corporation issuing the work orders to the contractor.

The facility will come up near the Saidapet Court, said a senior official of the civic body. The FOB would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.31 lakh. It would also have elevators on both sides. The work for installing elevators at an estimated cost of Rs.55 lakh is in the tendering stage. When the FOB was completed, work on the elevators would be taken up.

After the traffic police introduced one-way regulation on Taluk Office Road over two year ago, pedestrians demanded a foot overbridge. Then, the Corporation had announced that it would install an escalator there.

The proposed FOB would come as a blessing to pedestrians. “As there is no traffic signal at the spot, vehicles coming from the Saidapet bridge and Guindy tend to run at more speed in this area. Though a traffic constable is posted here during rush hour, many people find it difficult to cross the road at other times,” said T.Thirumal, an advocate at the Saidapet Court.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Shakeel Akhter said the traffic police had suggested that such facilities be installed in places on priority basis. “In many places such as near Shastri Bhavan and on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, the FOBs are not used. Pedestrians still prefer to walk across the road. On an experimental basis they are trying out an FOB with lifts in Nungambakkam. We will see the success rate of these FOBs [Nungambakkam and Saidapet] and suggest more in other places.”

SMOOTH MOVE: K. Natarajan, Airport Director (left) and A. Malairamu, General Manager (Engineering), AAI, on the walkalator at the Chennai airport on Thursday.

CHENNAI: A walkalator covering a distance of 50 metres in the corridor connecting the international and domestic terminals will become operational at the Chennai airport from August 15. It is the first of its kind in the country. The conveyor belt that transports people connects aerobridges: passengers use it to reach the aircraft.

K. Natarajan, Airport Director, who inspected the work on Thursday, said the total length of the walkalator would be 150 metres on each side. Once it is fully installed, passengers could comfortably walk along the corridor with their baggage from one terminal to the other. The walkalator would cover Bays 28, 29 and 30. Work has been completed between Bays 29 and 30 in both directions.

The facility has been installed at a cost of Rs 4.18 crore. Work began in January 2008 with the aim of completing it in 15 months, Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said. The remaining portion of the work would be completed by the end of September. By that time, the corridor connecting the domestic and international terminals would be ready, said the AAI authorities.

Since an aerobridge is erected near Bay 29, the walkalator would not be provided in this section, where passengers have to manually haul the luggage. Even the newly built airports at Bangalore and Hyderabad, maintained by private companies, do not have such a facility, AAI authorities added.

TN plans to develop MRTS station space commercially

R. Balaji

Chennai, Aug. 9

The Tamil Nadu Government is examining a Rs 136-crore commercial development space available at three of the MRTS (mass rapid transit system) stations to recover its investments in the project.

According to sources, the project for the development of commercial space at MRTS stations would involve public-private partnership to use the space available above the platform level at the stations in Taramani, Perungudi and Velachery.

The sources said the objective would be to develop the space with private sector participation on BOT (build-operate-transfer) basis with the private players investing in the construction and handling the operation and maintenance for a 25-year concession period. The Government’s contribution would be the land and provision of utilities.

The Government’s share of revenue from the project is expected to compensate for its investment in the MRTS project. Tamil Nadu has invested a third of the Rs 734 crore in the MRTS project with the Railways bringing the main contribution.

The other projects include a Rs 475-crore re-development, operation and maintenance of the private bus terminus at Koyambedu; and operation and maintenance of the fruit and vegetable wholesale market and the biomethanation project at Koyambedu.
