Cooum river restoration in 6 years: Stalin

CHENNAI: With the full cooperation of the Corporation, the Public Works Department and the Slum Clearance Board, the polluted Cooum river would be restored in another five to six years, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin has claimed.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating two Corporation parks along the river near Langs Garden, Pudupet and Sivananda Salai on Wednesday, Stalin said, “Singapore Cooperation Enterprise, which has been appointed as consultant for the Cooum River Restoration Project, is expected to submit its report in another six months.” Though the Singapore government had spent about 10 years to restore a river that was as polluted as the Cooum, we expect the restoration here could be done in five to six years at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore, Stalin added.

As part of the project, the process of rehabilitation of auto industries located along the Cooum, at a specially allocated place at Appur village near Singaperumal Koil, Kancheepuram, was progressing well, he conveyed.

State information minister Parithi Ilamvazuthi, Chennai mayor M Subramanian, Deputy chief minister secretary Dheenabandhu, municipal administration and water supply department secretary Ashok Varadhan Shetty and corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni accompanied Mr Stalin during the inaugural of the parks.
