‘Remove fish stalls from temple sites’

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Corporation to remove by November 7 its fish stalls installed after demolishing two temples at 33, First Avenue Road, Sashtri Nagar.

“It is alleged that after the removal of two temples, the Corporation put up its own fish stalls and hoardings in the said place. If the allegation is correct, the Corporation is directed to remove all fish stalls, hoardings or any structure put up by Sunday,’’ the First Bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam said and posted it for further hearing on November 8.

In her public interest writ plea, Radha Rajan of Kalakshetra Colony,  Besant Nagar contended that in the guise of restoring a footpath, the civic body struck down the Chelliamman Koil and the Pillayar Koil on First Avenue Road on May 25. Fish stalls were then put up. On October 15, it tried to demolish the Srinivasa Perumal Temple, but dropped the idea temporarily after protests by petitioner and locals.
