Corporation removing vinyl banners
| A fine of Rs.1,000 will be levied on building owners |

CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation on Monday started removing the vinyl banners carrying advertisements from several buildings across the city.
The civic body had earlier set Sunday as the deadline for removal of such banners by building owners. Officials of the Corporation said as the owners did not adhere to the deadline, the banners stuck on buildings were either removed using ladders or painted in black by the personnel. The action was initiated under the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act 1959.
Mayor M. Subramanian said that 240 buildings across the 10 zones of the Corporation have such digital banners and they would be removed in two or three days.
Besides levying a fine of Rs.1,000 for such violation, the civic agency would also collect the expense for removing the banners from the building owners, he added.
The Corporation had earlier banned posters and graffiti on the four arterial roads, 250 bridges and subways under its maintenance and its 3,464 buildings.
The Mayor, accompanied by Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan, inspected the work to remove a banner from a building in Guindy.
