CHENNAI: Mayor M Subramanian on Monday launched a drive to remove 240-odd large digital hoardings that have been illegally erected in different parts of the city.

The drive comes after the deadline served by the civic body to companies and building owners concerned to remove mega-digital banners put up against walls ended on Sunday.

Kicking off the drive at Guindy here, Subramanian said, “Ever since the erection of hoardings was banned by the Supreme Court, advertising companies had been searching for new methods and finally, zeroed in on walls.”

Action would be taken against the violators under the Tamil Nadu Open Places Prevention of Disfigurement Act,1959, and they would also have to shell out the amount spent on removing the illegal banners, the mayor added.
