Encroachments removed in Madurai

MADURAI: The Madurai Corporation on Wednesday launched an eviction drive on the city's arterial roads. Fruits and other articles worth Rs.1 lakh were seized by officials of Town Planning section during the drive.

The Corporation Commissioner, S. Sebastine, issued a warning that all shops and advertisement hoardings kept on the roads and platforms causing hindrance to traffic movement and common man would be removed. Besides, a fine would be imposed on the violators.

The officials conducted the encroachment removal drive in the south and north zones following receipt of several complaints, Mr. Sebastine said in a statement.

The officials said that fruit baskets spread out on the platforms in the Periyar bus stand causing inconvenience to the passengers were removed. The belongings of unauthorised fruit vendors who had encroached upon roads in Simmakkal, Yanaikkal and Vakkil New Street were seized.

The statement said that many hoardings kept for advertising various products for the Deepavali sale were pulled down. The drive against encroachments also targeted the road side flex boards, banners and temporary sheds.

Assistant Town Planning Officer, Palanichamy, and Building Inspectors, Narayanan and Elangovan, led the teams.
