Unauthorised structures on scheme roads removed

DONE AWAY WITH: A wall encroaching upon a road being demolished at Munusamy Nagar at Ramanathapuram in the city on Thursday. –
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation removed on Thursday unauthorised structures that encroached upon scheme roads at Munusamy Nagar at Ramanathapuram in the city. A special squad headed by Town Planning Officer M. Soudararajan carried out the demolition of the structures to restore the roads for use by the public.
The encroachment by two gated community complexes had denied the facility for people living in nearby colonies. South Zone Assistant Commissioner A. Lakshmanan and Assistant Town Planning Officers S. Ravichandran and Bhuvaneswari supervised the demolition. Mr. Ravichandran said the promoter of one of the residential complexes had actually submitted a gift deed to the Corporation to mark the handing over of space for a 200 ft long and 30 ft wide road. But, the promoter had built a wall on the outer boundary of the road, thus making it inaccessible for the people in the neighbourhood. The wall made this stretch usable only for the people living on the residential premises.
Mr. Ravichandran said people in the nearby colonies had been seeking the removal of the wall for the last five years. They had been pointing out that a common road had been converted into a private space. “We demolished the wall and the road can now be used by the public,” he said.
The other case was that of a 200 sq ft building and a sump encroaching upon a 300 ft long and 30 ft wide road. This stretch was gifted to the Corporation by a promoter whose 250-house gated community complex was nearing completion, the official said.
The Corporation team demolished the building.
